Provident Living Las Vegas

The Provident Community Garden started 12 years ago with the garden dedication on March 10, 2012. Originally located on a 5-acre parcel behind the private school at Jones and Oakey Blvd, we moved across the street to the south a few years ago and are now located on a five-acre parcel that we have leased from the Mt. View Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The garden provides members of the Las Vegas community an opportunity to practice and develop horticultural skills and experiences in a tranquil, friendly, cooperative social environment, promoting self-reliance, through the support, contributions and participation of members of the Provident Community Garden Association and its benefactors.

The garden has 90 individual 4’x 8’ garden beds and one large 20’ x 50’ community bed.  In addition, we have 56 fruit trees in the orchard. All the produce from the community bed is donated to local food banks. Individual gardeners also donate portions of their harvests.  During 2023 we donated 106 quarts of apricots, 28 quarts of eggplants, 36 quarts of green beans, 88 quarts of peppers, 20 quart of nectarines, 39 quarts of okra, 177 pounds of sweet potatoes, 130 quarts of tomatoes, and 111 pounds of zucchinis, all from the community bed and the orchard.  Individual gardeners also donated to local food banks; 15 quarts of eggplants, 58 quarts of green beans, 6 quarts of peppers, 20 quarts of okra, 74 pounds of sweet potatoes, 47 quarts of tomatoes, and 289 pounds of zucchinis.

The PCG is designed for gardeners who appreciate a safe, clean, orderly environment, supported by “Master Gardeners”, trained in local best practices, including organic principles, to help participants have a successful experience, translating into personal confidence, self-reliance and satisfaction.

PCG is a “community garden” and is open to general members of our community. “Seed money” and donations of material, equipment and expertise have come from individual benefactors and from other organizations in the valley. It is our hope that seeds of friendship will be sown along with seeds of fruits and vegetables. Great long-lasting friendships can come from working together in this and other worthy projects. All skill levels and physical capabilities are welcome and we want to see the garden continue to be beautified and provide a location for residents to come and grow their own food and learn provident living practices.
